- *sigh* just what I thought. First though, thanks already to those who
- replied via email or through news. In summary, many folks suggested
- A/UX 3.0. ... I knew it was there but can't afford it -- that's why I
- posted my query. I just dropped $4K and don't have much left. I also
- know about Mach10, which also looks promising, but at $600 (so the
- ads say) is also out of reach. Hmmm... anyone know the educational
- prices of these?
-
- Many folks did let me know about UUPC for the mac. Whew. There's hope
- yet. And it's a toss up between alpha and microemacs. One person
- suggested I get a 'real word processor'. Hmmm... Not the problem. I
- have a 'real word processor'. Three-ish actually -- pagemaker (well,
- ok...), claris works, and Microsoft Word (*gag* I HATE giving them my
- money). What I want is a text editor with EMACS compatible commands
- and a version of TeX. I hate using the mouse (*).
-
- As for the games, yeah, I see that sumex has lots o' games, including
- my favorite UNIX game moria. I just downloaded it to my sun, and will
- take it home with me tonight.
-
- Perhaps I'll let this stew on the back burner 'til everyone gets back
- from christmas break and try to compose a collection of what I've
- found. Thanks again for the replies.
-
- Actually, I'm thinking about buying a generic 486 type box and run a
- public domain version of unix (eventually GNU, linux now). Perhaps
- then I'll get some sort of Mac X and TCP/IP software and I'll be happy
- as a clam. I bet I can get a '486 with cheapo monitor and public
- domain unix up and running for less than A/UX 3.0. Hmmm...
- Interesting thought...
-
- * why did I buy the mac if I hate to use the mouse? If you have to
- ask ... (well, if you DO have to ask... so my wife can run PageMaker
- ... hard to find a UNIX version of that! There are, perhaps,
- hundreds of other practical and religious reasons, but we'll save
- that for another day :-)
-
- Thanks again. Harpy New Year!
