- A brief tutorial for a new mac owner, please:
-
- I am a proud papa of a bouncing baby performa 600CD, and have in
- anticipation been grabbing software from the net. These files are
- typically in .hqx format. I read that the program mcvert can run on
- my sun (and indeed, it does) to convert .hqx files to MacBinary
- format. The man page reads mentions data and resource forks, and data
- and rsrc files. Ok, here's the question:
-
- If I take my .hqx file(s) and convert to MacBinary and somehow manage
- to get these files to my mac, are they ready to go or do the
- MacBinary files require yet another round of translation to become
- executables? And, what's the deal with the forks? Just what is a
- fork, and what is it doing in my files...
-
- Here's what I observed when I ran mcvert on umoria (after all, I was
- raised on rogue, so moria seemed like a good first choice... :-)
-
- % mcvert umoria-55.hqx
- Converting Moria_1.0.cpt type = "PACT", author = "CPCT"
- Created Tue Dec 29 09:21:23 1992
- Modified Tue Dec 29 09:21:23 1992
-
- -- and sure enough --
-
- % ls -l Moria*
- -rw-rw---- 1 ctrbdo 330240 Dec 29 09:21 Moria_1.0.cpt.bin
-
- So now what do I do?
-
- If all of this is in a FAQ somewhere, just point me in the right
- direction. Many thanks.
