- Just the opposite of mine. I think if SOS-APPL can fix your machine
- by swapping a board (or a track-ball) that's fine, but if it requires
- any thought or complexity, then your better off going to a local or
- third-party place.
-
- I had a problem with my 170 freezing with lines across the display. I
- was told by various people (including two authorized and trained apple
- techs) that this was a problem with faulty oscillator connections on
- the system board. This gets worse when the machine warms up, or when
- you press on the Command key too hard. I called SOSAPPL and got them
- to send me a box (after waiting a long time on hold -- I guess there
- is no shortage of problems with the PBs) and I sent it out.
-
- I couldn't get any status info because their "computer tracking"
- system was down. I wanted them to ship it back on Saturday, but
- couldn't get them to do it because of some stupidity (I was willing to
- pay), and so I didn't have it for a week because I had to go out of
- town on business.
-
- When I finally got back, I found that my PB had been returned --- WITH
- MY COLOR-CARD DEINSTALLED --- and no note of any kind indicating what
- had been done to the machine (other than the obvious). I called APPL
- to find out the score, and it took them a DAY to come up with the lame
- excuse that they had taken out the color card and the problem went
- away. As far as I know, they didn't check anything in (or even read)
- the letter I sent along with the machine
-
- I subsequently had to send the machine back to Computer Care (makers
- of BookView Imperial, my color card -- these guys are great!) to have
- the card reinstalled and the system board oscillator resoldered -- now
- it works fine. This cost me a total of 3-weeks and $65.
-
- Not a happy camper.

-
- Mine is starting to do this too --- and I almost always use a
- third-party optical mouse! What junk. I'll take it to a dealer to
- get it replaced. (I would clean it myself, but I can't get the
- goddamned trackball ring off---broke two fingernails).
