-
- Roughly a week ago, someone posted a note concerning the HP Laserjet 4M and
- Truetype. This individual was unable to print truetype fonts from their Mac
- to the 4M. I'm currently thinking about the 4M and this would obviously throw
- a wrench into its use. I have not seen any response regarding this original
- note.
-
- So my question is to those with the 4M, and is if they are printing truetype
- fonts. If so (or if not), what, if any difficulties are there?
-
- Much appreciated,

-
- Hola,
-
- I was wondering if any other SE/30 users out there had any problem getting
- BBEdit to run on their machine. It runs fine on my IIx (with full complement
- of 20+ extensions) at work, but absolutely refuses to run on my SE/30 at
- home.
- I've tried turning off all extensions, booting from a clean System 7 floppy,
- and booting from a clean System 6 Floppy. In all cases when I launch BBEdit
- I get an illegal instruction error (I can provide the MacsBug dump, if that
- would help in diagnosis).
-
- Anyone have any ideas?

- In Issue 306, Richard Lim tells us of encountering error -5011 while trying to

-
- I don't think that's true; the proof-of-concept system that Apple
- demonstrated at the last developer's conference ran not only
- applications but also After Dark and even MacsBug, all without a
- 680x0 in the machine. If you think about it the PowerPC Mac *must*
- be able to run system-level 680x0 code, since Apple doesn't have time
- to rewrite all of the assembly code in System 7.1 and the Mac ROMs.
-
- I think Apple's goal is for the first PowerPC to be as compatible
- with existing software as the Quadra was at its introduction. Really
- funky stuff that deals directly with hardware, requires supervisor
- mode, etc. will break, but most people should be able to run all
- their current software. If Apple meets that goal the 68060 won't be
- very important, except to reassure customers who are nervous about
- emulation.
-
- Jim Matthews
- Dartmouth Software Development
-
- p.s. I really wish Apple would announce a name for the PowerPC Mac's
- main OS; PowerOpen is the name of the Unix-based A/UX successor, but
- the MacOS-on-microkernel-with-68020-emulation product is what most
- people will run, and to my knowledge it doesn't have an official
- name. How about MacOS NT.... :-)

- Subject: Partition Performance (A)
-
- spohn@rcf.mayo.edu asks:
- >Is there such thing as a rule of thumb on how to partition a disk for
- >best performance?
-
- Many months ago I submitted a scheme I have found effective. The response
- at the time was sufficiently favorable that I repeat the bare bones here:
-
- Rule 1: The nearer to the (physical) edge of the disk, the faster the
- throughput (due to rotational speed). This has nothing to do with "seek
- time", but once "found" the disk blocks will be read/written more quickly.
-
- Rule 2: The most frequently accessed software is the System software.
-
- Rule 3: Smaller partitions degrade more slowly as fragmentation occurs (the
- fragments can't get too far apart, reducing total seek time to collect them
- all).
-
- Rule 4: Separate the files that change (data files) from those that don't
- (apps, system, etc) to reduce the time and media needed for backups.
-
- Based on the above, I put a minimal partition for the System Folder (~
- 5-10MB depending on your needs) alone on the outermost edge of the disk, a
- partition for applications next, and then one or more partitions for data
- files <= 40MB each. Use something like TimeDrive to figure out how your
- partitioning software decides which partition to build "outside". The one
- with the fastest read/write is the outermost.

- Subject: Software companies vs. European consumers
-
- Michel Eytan mentioned some frustration with the $$ treatment that
- Europeans (or people with European addresses) receive from
- folks at places like pegasus (CONNECT magazine).
-
- While some people might be impressed with her frustration over a
- matter of $20.00 or so, the problem is really very serious and
- worth some attention.
-
- The fact is that those of us living in Europe are practically
- robbed by companies (such as Quark, Aldus, Adobe).
-
- While living in the States (I'm a U.S. citizen since birth), I received
- normal treatment and paid normal prices for software/hardware. Since
- living in Europe, I've been treated dreadfully by software companies.
-
- Quark tried to force me to pay over $2,000.00 for version 3.0 of
- their software just because of my European address. When I bought
- the same software for $500.00 from the States, they ignored my
- registration and said I would have to buy the product (again) in
- Europe (at the European price) before I could expect support.
- Needless to say, I never got the promised free upgrade to 3.1.
- Nor did I get the Quark Freebies Xtensions. =\
-
- Aldus, while *only* demanding twice the normal price for their
- software, told me that I would have to "make up the difference"
- of the money I saved by buying American before I could expect
- support.
-
- Adobe accused me of knowingly "breaking the law" by purchasing
- American software while living in Europe. This honestly was not
- true, and I couldn't convince the abusive "support" person of
- my innocence. I know now that these companies don't like people
- who live in Europe, but I honestly didn't know that THEN.
-
- There are a lot of companies who treat me like a customer (regardless
- of race, sex, religious belief or address): CE Software, Alladdin
- Software, Userland, Fifth generations, Micron and several others
- whose names I can't bring to mind during my polemic =).
-
- Microsoft didn't ignore me, but they thought I'd purchased a
- PC pascal compiler (and thanked me for it) even though I'd
- purchased the Microsoft Office for the Mac (it was missing an
- MSWord utilities diskette and they never got around to sending
- one).
-
- Symantec ignored me, too, but I never pursued it. I was just too
- depressed by the treatment I'd received from Quark/Aldus/Adobe.
-
- If you could see all the packages that I've purchased, you'd know
- that I'm not a pirate (over 120 MB of paid for software). But when
- I think of the crappy treatment that I've received , and I consider
- the prices these folks demand, I really do understand why software
- piracy is so popular in Europe.
-
- One last note to this painful reply: I sincerely love Xpress,
- PageMaker, Photoshop, Illustrator and ATM, but it will take some
- time before I no longer resent the companies that make these products.
