- Enclosed is a binhex file containing a submission for your archives.
-
- PCalc is a neat simulation of a programmable scientific calculator.
-
- Please note that it *requires* System 7.x.x.
- If you use System 6.0.x or earlier, here is what you are missing:
-
- Programmable functions via a simple mini language.
- System 7.x.x savvy:
- Can be controlled & programmed via Apple Events.
- Balloon Help for every button, menu & dialog item.
- Resolves Aliases.
- 32-bit clean.
- Multifinder aware.
- Large 16+3 digit display.
- Hierarchical menu of user functions.
- Includes many functions for converting between different weights and
- measures.
- Quick, one click, conversion between decimal, hexadecimal and binary
- numbers.
- AND, OR, NOT, XOR, ROL, ROR and other extra functions in hex and binary
- mode.
- 30 named user constants, 10 for each mode.
- 'Undo' of any action.
-
- Enhanced graphics when viewed on a 256 colour or 16 gray (or better)
- screen.
- Colour graphics and help screens are stored in separate plug-in extensions.
- Runs on any Mac with System 7.x.x or greater, with or without Color
- Quickdraw.
-
- And of course it's freeware. If you only download one calculator this year,
- give
- this a try...

- Here's the latest version of Robert Polic's SCSIProbe control panel.
-
- There has been some concern expressed recently over a bogus version,
- SCSIProbe 4.0, that had appeared on some bulletin boards. That version
- was a harmless April Fool's practical joke, perpetrated by someone whose
- sense of humor needs adjustment. That bogus version has caused Robert

- Subject: [*] twilight control panel vers. 7.1.0 released
-
- Hello moderators,
-
- this is the first release of the control panel TwiLight, which replaces the
- standard brightness control panel, supplied by Apple with system 7.
-
- TwiLight allows you to control the brightness of the build-in screen of
- Macintoshes that support the brightness control panel distributed by Apple
- with System 7 software. It also contains a simple screen saver and allows
- setting of the brightness of the screen directly, using user-defined modifier
- keys and the 0-9 keys.
-
- Version 7.1.0:
-
- First release. Tested several months on a Classic II with 10 Mb and
- System 7 with Tuner 1.1.1.
-
- Requirements:
-
- A macintosh that supports the Apple brightness control panel (Classic,
- Classic II, Performa 200) and system 7.
-
- I suggest this control panel to be placed in the 'cp' directory.

-
- My Powerbook 140's trackball has been giving me trouble for a while, and last

- thing ;).
-
- Monday morning I called 1-800-SOS-APPL (after being told by all the local
- dealers that they couldn't do it in less tha a couple of weeks), talked with
- a nice rep who took down all of my information and said he'd send out the
- box for shipping and that the'd have it back on the 28th (not great but better
- than the dealers). So the box arrives on Tuesday, and I send it right back
- out via Airbourne Express (all the forms come predone at Apple's expense).
-
- This morning (Thursday), my Powerbook returned to me FULLY REPAIRED!!!
-
- Talk about service, they turned the machine around the SAME DAY they recieved
- it, so I was only without my PB for 2 days (airbourne time).
-
- It's about time someone (Apple, thankfully) did something like this in the
- computer (or any other) industry.

-
- Well, Todd, you don't really say what you've done. You don't mention the
- download protocol, the systems used, the software used, the settings used,
- or the files you had trouble with. All that info can pin down the cause of
- your problem.
-
- But I'll take a shot anyway. My guesses:
-
- 1) There have been some changes in the StuffIt format in the last few
- years; the old decompressors can't handle the newer formats. Try unstuffing
- with Stuffit Expander 3.0 (info-mac/util/stuffit-expander-30.hqx), which
- handles all the StuffIt formats (and a lot more--and is free).
-
- 2) If you're doing your ftp first to a mainframe and then to your Mac, odds
- are pretty good that you wound up with MacBinary files that have to be
- turned into real Mac files before StuffIt will work on them. Try using
- info-mac/util/unfolder-20.hqx
- on the errant files.

-
- The '060 may be worth waiting for because all the nifty little
- extensions and control panels you've come to love probably won't work
- under PowerOPEN. Applications, on the other hand are not likely to be
- much of a problem, even if they haven't been completely recompiled in
- native code.
-
- First, do you really care if your word processor runs on 5 times as fast
- as it would on a Quadra rather than 15 times as fast? If your using
- something like PhotoShop, native code can make a difference. However,
- that difference isn't going to be as large as you might think because
- Macintosh applications are executing toolbox calls a surprising fraction
- of the time (more than two-thirds of the time and sometimes as much as
- five-sixths of the time). Apple is rewriting the entire toolbox in
- native RISC (perhaps not every routine will be rewritten for the first
- version of the PowerPC operating system). Hence, even 1986 Macintosh
- applications that religiously followed Apple's programming guidelines
- should run on the PowerPC and in native code 70 percent of the time or
- more. At that rate, the '060 isn't likely to offer much of a raw speed
- advantage for older applications.
-
- [One of the key points of the PowerPC RISC design is that it is more
- cost-effective than the Motorola and other complex chips. Even if the
- speed is similar, the PowerPC Mac will come at a reduced price. Also,
- power consumption should be lower, which is important for portables. -Bill]

-
- I just purchased a Mirror Quick! JPEG Accelerator card in order to see if
- I could make better Quicktime movies or smaller files. I was sceptical
- that it would do much, but was assured that if I didn't like it, I could
- return the card (sale priced at $499) within 30 days.
-
- Using a Quadra 950 with 24 Mb of Ram, QuickTime 1.5, and a Videospigot
- capture card with its software (Screenplay 1.1.1), I captured a 12 second
- QuickTime video clip from a TV monitor output at no limit per frame
- (coming to about 15-16 fps) at the 320 by 240 size, with audio enabled.
-
- Here are the results.
-
- 12 second clip 320 x 240 (all at 3.0 quality)
-
- Default ( saved by Videospigot in its native format) 7.9 Mb
- JPEG without the accelerator board 5.8 Mb
- JPEG compression with accelerator board 2.6 Mb
-
- Without the card it took 4 minutes and 37 seconds to make the JPEG
- compressed file. With the card it took 1 minute and 40 seconds to
- compress. I can't explain why there was a difference in file size
- between the JPEG compression with and without the board, but it
- really did make an enormous difference in the time it took to save
- the file and the degree to which it compressed the file.
-
- As to quality, when played back through Spigotplay, I could not tell
- any difference between the original 7.9 Mb file and the 2.6 Mb file.
- If anything the JPEG compressed file played back more smoothly than the
- original, perhaps because it required less computing to put images to the
- screen.
-
- Needless to say (but I'm saying it anyway), I have nothing whatsoever to
- do with the company. If you have questions, however, you can call them at
- 612.633.2105.

- I have been using ResEdit 2.1.1 and SoftwareFPU for years (well, ONE year)
- with
- no problems. The problem may be caused by a combination of SFPU and something
- else. Have you tried installing fresh copies?

- I had that problem with ResEdit on my docked Duo 230 (but not when it was
- undocked). It happened even when I restarted without INITs. Reinstalling
- the system solved the problem.

- Subject: StyleWriter & Print Monitor
-
- Forgive me to those who say I shouldn't post this question here. But...I
- have been reading the last few days about how StyleWriter comes w/ a
- utility ...Print Monitor...to speed up the SW printing basically...while u
- work. I purchased my SW in June. Did this utility become included
- afterwards?
- I cannot find this utility at all on my system. I looked in my SW manual
- index could not locate anything about it. I have had my Mac system for a few
- months now and have not realized the full capabilities of it. This is one
- of the examples. thanks for any help.

- Subject: WordPerf/Mac 2.1 <-> DOS 5.1 Transfers (4)
-
- Thanks to Dave Reiser for his comments in #304 on the WP Inter-Platform
- Transfer problem.
-
- > ... The biggest problem is that
- >fonts on the two platforms (for any software) are not identical. The problem
- >is a bit worse for WordPerfect DOS because WPCorp. designed their own fonts
- >for the DOS program. No matter what WPCorp does with fonts, unless the same
- >type house wrote fonts with identical metrics for both platforms (ATM,
- >anyone?) there is _no_ hope of perfect translations.
-
- True enough, but most of what I see can NOT be credibly associated with
- font metric problems.
-
- >I'm not sure, but some of the margins and tabs problems may be related. WP
- >may be attempting to compensate for known font metric conversion problems.
- >I think they'd be better off translating margins and tabs exactly.
-
- If that is indeed what they are doing, I would use rather stronger language
- to characterize it. But frankly, I doubt that this is what is going on, and
- even if it were, I find some of my transfer problems hard to explain by
- this hypothesis.
-
- Here is a rundown:
-
- My problems started when I received a (good-looking) printout of a certain
- document that was generated with WP5.1 on a DOS machine, along with a DOS
- disk of the same file, done immediately after the printing. My task was to
- do assorted contents revisions, andto return it. When I read the disk into
- my Mac IIfx (Apple File Exchange or AccessPC; the results were the same),
- and opened the transfer with my brand-new WMacP2.1.2, the results looked
- messy, quite different than the WP5.1 printout. Some justified paragraphs
- had been converted into centered paragraphs, some italics were gone, a
- string of underlined blanks showed up out of nowhere, some returns were
- missing, and there were assorted horizontal misalignments that might indeed
- be font metric related.
-
- I fixed up all the glitches, did my revisions, and saved and printed the
- document (it looked gorgeous). I then saved another copy in 5.1 format, for
- returning to my partner. Just to check the accuracy of the transfer, I
- re-imported the 5.1 version into WPMac: Some tabs in the re-imported
- version were simply not at the place where they had been in the 2.1
- version, and the page layout was again messed up (although far less bad
- than after the original transfer).
-
- Following a call to WP's 800 number, I sent the various disk files and
- accompanying printouts to WP for dissection. Stay tuned.
-
- >Also, the file transfer capability definitely falls down on multiple passes
- >between platforms. There is some degradation on the return of a round trip.
-
- I can live with that for exotic features, such as fancy page borders, but I
- find it inexcusable for features as basic as tabs. To me, multiple passes
- are the essence of cross-platform compatibility.

- My apologies for probably causing an unnecessary rush by providing
- an ftp address for the Macintalk, which turned out to be something else. As
- Murph Sewald informed me, it is a HC external for Macintalk, not the beast
- itself.
- I gophered that file and was deceived by the fact that somebody had
- archived it under the name Macintalk. There was no way to check it at the
- moment.
- Sorry, will try again. Happy holidays.

- Seems, you are out of luck. Ehman went belly up. If you browse through the
- couple of recent issues of MacUser, there should be an article on it and
- you might find a phone number, but don't get you hopes too high.
