- Motorola didn't follow the normal System V.3 printer configuration conventions,
- and instead rolled all of its supported printer models into a single model
- file "ptnnx". Even for those printers that Motorola supports, it doesn't
- fully support the printers with things like terminfo entries, and becuase
- of that, a number of lp options, lpforms, and some other printing stuff
- simply doesn't work.
-
- You have a few options when dealing with printers on Motorola systems, none
- of which are terribly pleasant, but here they are:
-
- (1) Muck with ptnnx to modify existing printer definitions or create new ones.
- I got a Panasonic laser printer to work this way, and it wasn't too
- difficult. This isn't a bad way to go if the printer you want to add
- uses emulation modes which are supported by the existing models.
-
- (2) Create a new model file from scratch or from one of the non-ptnnx model
- files. Add terminfo entries and the other stuff that one is supposed to
- have for System V.3 printers, and everything should work. I say "should"
- because as far as I know, Motorola never tested things like lpforms or
- any of the lp options that it didn't support.
-
- You might be able to find the appropriate model files, etc., for your
- printer if you ask around on the net (comp.printers?) or if you ask
- your printer vendor.
-
- (3) Purchase the Commercial Networking Extensions Package from Motorola.
- It contains an lpr/lpd system. Beware that lpr simply passes print
- jobs into the System V.3 print system, and so you may end up with the
- same problems. However, if you happen to have another system with
- lpr/lpd, then connect your printer to *that* system and pass your
- print jobs over from the Motorola system using lpd.
-
-
- In any case, call your Motorola rep and complain. When I worked for Motorola,
- I thought that their printer support was shoddy and short sighted. Hardly
- the "open systems" that they advertised! :-(
