  10. I have a Backpack through-the-parallel-port tape drive that I use
  11. to back up my TI3000, Toshiba T1000LE, a desktop 386DX, and a desktop 286.

  13. The unit is very easy to use, and convenient; it is "permanently"
  14. connected to my desktops through a switch, and when I want to back
  15. up the notebooks I run a line from the notebook in question to the
  16. switch.

  18. The drive does, however, have a couple of idiosyncrasies.  The instructions
  19. say "Do Not Use SONY Tape Cartridges", which sounds silly--but the drive
  20. really doesn't work with SONY cartridges--at least, mine doesn't. Also,
  21. it may not work with any other (new) cartridges; they should be wound/rewound
  22. first.  Also, the drive didn't want to work at first with the Toshiba; this
  23. required setting a software switch when the drive software was called.  The
  24. good news is that in all of these small (and nonrepeated) problems, the
  25. Backpack's makers were very responsive to questions on their hot line.  They
  26. know what they're doing and they're courteous about it.
