- I have a compaq lite 25c (active matrix color) and have run into a "deadlock"
- with communications. The compaq comes with a built-in serial port and a
- built-in trackball which is set up on a second "invisible" serial port.
-
- The problem: the first serial port can be set to com1 or com3, the
- trackball can be set to com1 or com2, and the optional 9600 bps internal
- modem can be set to com1 or com3 (possibly com2 also, I don't recall and
- it's not important to the problem).
-
- The compaq setup program also assigns the IRQ for each port, and for com3
- only allows IRQ10 or IRQ15. I would like to keep all three ports available
- (use the trackball all the time, the modem all the time, and the serial port
- in my office to transfer files). The problem: I use procomm plus 2.01 and it
- won't touch IRQ 10 or IRQ 15 with a ten foot vaccinated crowbar. In fact, it
- only has room for a single digit when selecting the IRQ line. I have called
- compaq and the tech support people could only suggest disabling the serial
- port and using the modem/trackball and then disabling the modem and using the
- serial port/trackball. This is a real hassle as there is no simple command
- to automate this, but, rather, a complex menu system application to change
- things around.
-
- I have also tried crosstalk and crosstalk communicator and they have the
- same IRQ restrictions. Why compaq chose 10/15 is anybody's guess. Now for
- the question: has anybody else encountered this and if so: (a) have you
- found a comm package that will allow IRQ10/IRQ15 (b) have you patched
- procomm to make it accept IRQ10/15 or (c) have you found a way to make
- the lite 25c assign com3 to a more reasonable IRQ line (most machines will
- assign com1 and com3 to the same IRQ with no problems.
-
- Thanks.....
