  10.          CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

  12.    There is a conference on Free Software taking place in Moscow,
  13. Russia, April 19-23, 1993.
  14.  
  15.    The conference is hosted by SUUG, the Society of Unix User Groups
  16. (formerly the Soviet Unix Users Group), the Russian Center for Systems
  17. Programming, the Russian Chapter of the Free Software Foundation, and
  18. the International Center for Scientific and Technical Information.
  19.  
  20.    Participant specialists are coming from North America, Europe and
  21. Japan.  We have just learned that Richard Stallman, founder of the
  22. Free Software Foundation, and recipient of the ACM Admiral Grace
  23. Hopper Award and MacArthur Fellowship, will attend.
  24.  
  25.    The main topics of the Workshop include:
  26.    - the current state of the GNU project and other FSF projects;
  27.    - "free" software means information freedom and sharing;
  28.    - free software portability in Open Systems environments;
  29.    - user experiences with free software;
  30.    - free software in education and training;
  31.    - legal aspects of free software;
  32.    - relevance of free software to NIS modernization and democracy;
  33.    - how NIS scientists can contribute to free software.
  34.  
  35.    Concurrent with the conference, there will be a small exhibition
  36. demonstrating free software in a networked heterogeneous environment.
  37.  
  38.    The conference encourages submissions of original designs, papers
  39. and ideas, and it welcomes the participation of computer and software
  40. companies.
  41.  
  42.    In the past, a conference of this kind has drawn 120-140 attendees
  43. from within the former Soviet Union, including 20-30 computer
  44. specialists, 60-80 enthusiasts, 20-30 persons from the commercial
  45. sector and members of the public.  This year the turnout is expected
  46. to be larger, because there is great interest in free software among
  47. all kinds of programmers and users.
