- I am sure this is a FAQ. And if some one can point me to the
- appropriate literature I would be happy to RTFM. Actually, I
- would appreciate references. Anyway:
-
- What are the specifications of the various busses, in particular,
- ISA, EISA, VESA VL, and MicroChannel? What about XT and AT busses --
- are these different from the first four?
-
- By "specifications" I mean bit-width (8, 16 or 32) and speed(s).
- For example, I believe that ISA is 8-bit, 8MHz. EISA is a 32-bit
- bus, I believe (maybe not). Is it 8MHz as well? Do any of the
- busses have variable speeds? Can any of the busses keep up with
- a i486DX/50? What about a i486DX2/66?
-
- I presume that any of the i486 processors talk to main memory through
- the bus. If true, then the maximum speed of a 66MHz processor
- accessing main memory through an ISA bus it 8MHz for byte access
- or 2 MHz for 32-bit word access. That can't be correct!
- Now, if it is true, then I presume that's why external cache's
- were created. These somehow permit the processor access to a limited
- amount memory while bypassing the bus. The cache must be loaded
- from main memory, however, and this must be done through the bus.
- So, the only real speed advantage comes through the execution of
- program loops small enough to fit in the cache. Is this correct?
-
- Is there any PC setup with a 32-bit bus that can keep up with
- a 50 or 66 MHz i486?
-
- Please forgive my dumb questions, however, most PC users that I
- know, have been unable to answer them.
-
- Thanks in advance!
