- I use my HP 48 in my Master of Applied Finance course regularly. I often
- find that I need to be able to differentiate fairly complex equations
- "on the road" (many branches of financial theory require calculus, e.g.
- portfolio management, option pricing etc.) The HP 48 is ideal for this,
- and I actually prefer to differentiate equations using the HP48 over
- Mathematica for Windows or MACSYMA because of it's friendlier interface
- and easy accessibility (it takes my PC over a minute just to load the
- Mathematica kernel, not good if you only want to differentiate one
- equation and then do some simple function evaluations).
- The programmability of the HP48 also means that I can keep most of my
- often used equations online ready for the Equation Solver.
- I've occasionally used matrix functions to solve simultaneous linear
- equations.
-
- I would say that the HP48 is able to handle the majority of my
- problem solving needs when I don't have access to a PC, plus it is
- a whole lot easier to set up and use than a PC.
