- I think that the sum of arguments presented can be answered fairly
- simply: If it doesn't fit your needs, don't buy it.
-
- I debated the purchase of an HP48 for a considerable time, and ultimately
- decided that this was the calculator that best fit my needs as a student at
- that moment. A SPARC would have been nice, as would a NeXT, a CRAY, and a
- 6-disc CD changer. I came to the conclusion, however, that the HP48 came the
- closest to solving my most prevelant technical needs for the price. This would
- not have been my choice if I were doing 3D graphical Gaussian surfaces,
- computation of thousands of pieces of multidimensional statistical analysis, or
- if I were doing finite element analysis. However, for physics, calc, chem,
- etc, it works very well. I don't need the benifit of something a CRAY, or
- MathCad (most of the time), or the such. I am very happy with my solution to
- my needs (ie: if it ain't broke, don't fix it). If your needs are different,
- ie: you want to type a thesis for your graduate studies, please don't buy an
- HP48. Buy a typewriter.
-
- For those who aren't quite sure what their needs are: most stores around
- here have a wonderful 90-day return policy. If not 90, I'm sure your can at
- least find a 30-day return policy. Take it home. Play with it. See if it's
- what you need. Ah, what if you use it for a year or so and then switch majors
- to one in which you no longer need the HP? Sell it. You could probably get
- about $200 for it right now. If you bought it for about $250, you've lost
- $50. Over 365 days, that's a whopping $.68 a day (you couldn't even feed a
- family of 5 in Somolia for that:)).
-
- Besides, hey, it's a neat toy.
