- OK here's what I want in a handheld computing device:
-
- Function plotting
- Serial interface (mainly for modems)
- High programmability (IE Easy to use and powerful)
- Large memory (enough to store fair amounts of sample data/files)
- Multi-line display (Makes programming and serial stuff easier)
- Ability to play games (For my long bus trips home from school)
- Ability to store addresss, names, etc.
- Access to large amounts of free/low cost software
- Low cost.
-
- Now both a DOS based portable or an HP48 are likely to give me all of this,
- but with the HP48, the cost in ~$300.00 plus maybe ~100.00 for an expansion
- card. For a DOS based notebook, your looking at ~700.00 minimum, plus
- ~100.00 for enough software (shareware) to do the modem/funtion plotting
- thing and have a programming language more powerful then GWBASIC.
- After all that the HP48 is cheaper, still more powerful (IE it'll do
- symbolic math the notebook still needs more software), actually fits
- in my palm, is sturdy enough to be dropped 6-10ft, and will run longer
- then 6hrs without a battery change. Plus all this software is much more
- integeral to the calculator then in an MSDOS based machine, IE Plot the
- results of a GWBASIC program on a PC, or how about taking the results
- of an integral done by Mathematica and feeding it into a GWBASIC program
- that takes sample data from the serial port, etc, etc, etc. The HP does
- all of these things easily. The PC has advantages too, but for my needs
- and budgets, the HP48 is cheapest machine that can do it all, and as a
- bonus it does a ton more that's a ball to play with :-)
