- The official answer is: 2 meters per equivalent device load. If you only
- have the printer/converter attached, that would be 4m total.
-
- However, compared to more "modern" schemes like SCSI, HP-IB is pretty
- robust. I would start by just running a trial cable. 20m should work
- without much trouble. I have heard of lengths up to 75m, but that's iffy.
- The longest cable HP makes is the 8120-3449 (8m). To join cables, use an HP
- 30070-00043 joining plate (if still available).
-
- If you run into trouble, add some idle HP-IB devices on the bus. If you
- have an old HP 797x/8x tape drive, or HP 256x printer, they are ideal,
- because you can set internal resistor packs to 7 equivalent device loads.
- Be sure to set an address different than your printer/converter (which is
- typically 1). With that plus your printer/converter (1 load), and the host
- (1 load), you have 9 loads, for a SUPPORTED max cable length of 18 meters.
-
- At the converter (HP 92203J?) you can get away with between 10 and 20 feet
- of parallel cable.
-
- The HP-IB extenders are product number 37204A (coax), with an Option to use
- fiber. Be sure to buy two. They support up to 1000m interconnects.
- Another alternative is a third-party TCP/IP LAN-to-parallel adaptor.
