- rlpdaemon is unfortunately somewhat tricky to get set up the first
- time.
-
- i recommend running rlpdaemon from inetd. we used to run it as a daemon
- but we are having better luck running it from inetd.
-
- when we ran rlpdaemon as a daemon, we found that we needed
- the fully-qualified domain name of the other hosts in /etc/hosts.equiv
- (never tried the ~lp/.rhosts approach), even though the other hosts
- were in the same domain.
-
- we've had no odd problems like that running rlpdaemon from inetd.
- just uncomment the line from /etc/inetd.conf, run "inetd -c", and
- check the "printer allow" statement in /usr/adm/inetd.sec.
-
- you might try running rlpdaemon with the -l options, which will
- start a log file for remote requests in /usr/spool/lp/lpd.log.

-
- this message doesn't actually mean the remote host is down, it means
- that the printer service on the remote host is down or refusing
- to talk to that host.
-
- not an official response.
