  13. Situation:

  15. One HP 9000/700 series machine with an HP Laserjet III attached directly.
  16. People can print just fine to the local printer.  I want a few other HPs
  17. (all 9000/700 series, HP-UX 8.07) to be able to print to this printer.  I
  18. set up rlpdaemon to run out of /etc/rc, adding a properly-permitted and
  19. owned .rhosts file in (I believe) /usr/spool/lp.  After a reboot, the
  20. daemon fires up with no problems, and it appears that everything is set
  21. at the box-with-the-printer's end.  I run SAM on the remote clients, adding
  22. a remote printer setup.  The scheduler is turned on.  The printer is
  23. enabled.  lpstat looks happy.  Then I try to print and run into a...

  27. I get an error message from the printing "client" to the effect of 
  28. "waiting for box-with-printer to come up".  
  29. Well, the printer box *is* up -- I can ping/telnet to it just fine.
  30. rlpdaemon appears to be running just fine.  Nothing looks out of the
  31. ordinary, apart from the fact that I can't print.  So I...

  35. *  Running rlpdaemon from inetd instead of /etc/rc.  Same problem.
  36. *  Configuring the clients by hand instead of SAM.  Same problem.
  37. *  Specifying an IP address instead of hostname for remote box.  Same problem.

  39. I'm out of ideas.  If anyone could post any pointers, I'd appreciate it
  40. muchly.  I did HP-HP printing once a while back and never ran into this
  41. problem, so I'm fairly sure there's something real trivial I'm just
  42. missing.  But I have no clue as to what it is.  As I RTFM, I get the 
  43. distinct feeling that I'm doing things right as far as I can tell.
