- The chip that you would replace is the Kernal. If you are going to
- replace it, get the JiffyDOS instead (I'd recommend just the SX
- version, but you could go for the C-64 version) as it will help with
- your RAMLink in other ways and is really nice to have. Be aware, though,
- that replacing the kernal with a C-64 one will cause software to think
- you have a C-64 and any software that needs a cassette-port dongle is
- not going to let you get away without one.
-
- But I doubt that's the real problem. The SX-64 has a ribbon cable
- between the expansion port and the board. This often causes timing
- problems with devices such as REUs. You could try cutting down the
- length of the cable, but that's rather a lot of work for a maybe
- solution.
-
- One other thing that can be done to help the compatibility of the SX is
- a 3.3K-ohm pull-up added to the /SRQ line of the serial port. The
- pull-up is there on the 64 for the datasette, but some fast-loading and
- copy-protection schemes use the line with serial operations in odd ways
- that don't work well without the pull-up. I wouldn't expect this was
- related to your problem, though.
