- Out-of-the-box, the unix pc can access a single MFM drive up to 1024 cylinders
- and 8 heads (67MB). If you simply replace the stock WD1010 disk controller
- with a WD2010, the 1024 cylinder hardware limit increases to a 2048 cylinder
- limit in hardware, and a 1400 cylinder limit in the kernel. The WD2010 is
- completely compatible -- just plug-n-play.
-
- If you need access to more than eight heads and/or more than one drive, you'll
- need to do a modification that's been done many different ways. I gather that
- the most direct upgrade path available right now is from ICUS (thanks to
- Gil Kloepfer). I did it the old fashioned way, and believe me you'd rather
- go with the new ICUS method... looks much easier!
-
- Still, doing this upgrade is not for the faint of heart (or part!), so you
- might want to just swap the WD2010 in and get a nice drive like the miniscribe
- 3085 (80M: more than 1024 cylinders but only 8 heads).
