- There is a sort of virus program located on the ICD BBS, and perhaps
- other places as well. It is in the SpartaDOS Utilities section,
- and I believe it is called SUPER.ARC.
-
- It deARCS to the following files:
-
- SUPER.DOC
- SUPER.BAT
- SUPER.EXE
- SUPER1.SCN
- SUPER2.SCN
-
- the doc file says something about this being a program to super compress
- all your hard disk files, and to just execute the batch file, by typing
- in something like
-
- -SUPER
-
- well, even the EXE is only a few hundred bytes long, so I was immediately
- suspicious of the program. Basically, I think SUPER.BAT copies the two
- SCN files to the screen, which says something like "compressing files"
- then "removing unwanted files" It then executes SUPER.EXE, which is
- another batch file, which contains lines similar to the following in it:
-
- ERASE *.ARC
- ERASE *.TXT
- ERASE *.COM
- ERASE *.EXE
- ERASE *.SYS
- ERASE *.BIN
-
-
- You get the idea, the program is nothing but a batch file for SpartaDOS
- users designed to wipe out as much of your stuff from your default drive
- as possible, and says something to the effect of "SUCKER!" at the end.
- Not really a virus, more like a poorly designed Trojan Horse or something.
- Nevertheless, there may be some people who wouldn't think to check out
- the program before executing it. As an endless servant to fellow 8 bitters,
- I thought it best to bring this little gem of a program to the attention
- of the netters out there.
-
- The mere fact that such a program even EXISTS on the ICD BBS is testament
- to how much they give a darn about the 8 bit computers. Obviously their
- BBS SYSOP doesn't check the program uploads before allowing them to
- appear accessible to the public. If someone has the time, perhaps ICD
- should be given a call to discuss this problem. At the least the program
- should be removed from their BBS.
-
- Have fun, and enjoy 8 bit computing.
