- Well... some REALLY good DOSes out there are:
-
- MyDOS (4.53 is the latest version), which is almost 100% Atari DOS 2.0/
- 2.5 compatible, and supports subdirectories, RAMdisks, high-cap-
- acity drives, etc. I use it, and love it, and it's public domain
- (getting it to your Atari w/o a modem or disk drive in the 1st
- place is a trick, but I'm sure some PD wherehouses and/or 8-bit
- stores that sell PD have it...)
-
- SpartaDOS-X (version ??) I don't have it, never've used it or even seen
- it. It's cartridged based, not being made any more, MS-DOS-look-
- alike, commercial of course, and some 8-bit stores'll definitely
- have it. Many people love this DOS.
-
- SpartaDOS (v.3.2?) It's a lot like the above SDX, but is disk-based, and
- is also commercial. It's also widely used, although it has some
- quirks. I've used it before. I had no idea what I was doing,
- and of course didn't like it because of that :).
-
- If you like MS-DOS style DOSes go for one of the Sparta's. If you like
- Atari DOS (vanilla-DOS) style DOSes (with menus), get MyDOS or any old
- Atari DOS-type DOS, but the most widely used of this type of DOSes is of
- course MyDOS. (It's now PD, that's probably why.. also, since it's so
- used, many upgrades've been made, making it even more widely used, etc.)
-
-
- So you have one way to go or another.
-
- Also, for modems, there's the SX212 direct-connect (no interface
- required), made by Atari, probably still being made (as it has an RS232
- port, making it ST/IBM usable). You can get SX-EXpress!, which is a
- disk-based terminal program for it for as little as $3 (it's PD) or as
- much as $10 (grr..I got it for that).
-
- For terminal programs, some people go the Express! way, and others (like
- me! :) ) the BobTerm way. BobTerm is PD, and Express! also comes on
- cart. >>>I THINK<<<, which would of course be commercial. (Is there such
- a thing as a PD cart!?... I mean, burning Eproms is just like copying
- disks, eh? Just charge more for parts for the cart. People charge $$
- for disks on PD stuff.. Interesting concept....)
-
- Also there are terminals like DeTerm, which is pretty good (pull-down
- menu driven, but not graphical). It can play breakout while doing xfers,
- etc.
-
- There's ANSI-Term (in beta, last I saw. v0.3), which doesn't support
- color, runs in graphics mode (slow :( ), but does its jon
- job
-
- oops...a call!
- bye!
- that's about it
