  12. I collect posts to comp.binaries.apple2 and feed them to folks in the two clubs
  13. I belong to. Before I can do this I have to understand just what the post does.
  14. In MOST cases this is very easy since there is a README or FILE.docs file
  15. included in the .shk file. On the other hand, there are a disturbing number of
  16. posts that consist only of a "BIN" file and it then becomes my job to figure
  17. out just what these do. As an example, two files were recently posted, CNSQ1
  18. and CNSQ2. Both were 32K in size which implies some sort of graphic, however, I
  19. couldn't get Platinum Paint to load a recognizable picture for either and
  20. typing: BRUN CNSQ1 from a BASIC prompt put me into the monitor so the BIN
  21. designation was clearly in error. (I assume someone will promptly provide the
  22. perfectly obvious meaning to CNSQ such that I will immediately know how to deal
  23. with the files named in this manner in a rational manner. Oh well.)

  25. The bottom line for these and a number of other posts to the binaries is that
  26. they end up in my bit bucket. This saddens me since I know that folks have
  27. spent a lot of effort on these programs/files and want to share them with
  28. others. The bottom line is, if you don't tell the user community just what it
  29. is you are trying to share and how to use it, it will be thrown away as
  30. either useless or a potential virus.

  32. One retort might be, "I put a TON of comments ahead of the BINSCII file, so
  33. what is your problem?"

  35. My answer is: "Sorry Charlie," I (and a lot of others) run sciibin on my
  36. Unix(R) box and download ONLY the result of this action, so your comments are
  37. never seen at the destination Apple. In addition, the BBS header is
  38. never part of the .shk file I give to my two Apple clubs.

  40. Finally, I'm so sorry I didn't vote for the moderated binaries group. I
  41. foolshly thought it coulnd't possibly fail. I won't make that mistake
  42. the next time it comes up for a vote!
