  12. Recently I've discovered that my SupraFaxModem's TR (Terminal
  13. readly) LED no longer lights up when turned on.  After some
  14. investigation, I came to the conclusion that neither the modem
  15. or the flow-control modem cable is at fault.  I then plugged the
  16. modem into the Printer port, and sure enough, the TR light came
  17. back on.  I've ran the IIgs Diagnostic v3.0 tests for the
  18. serial ports, and it reported "Serial Crystal Test Failed," and
  19. I should consult the Apple Technical repair manual.

  21. My question is:  Is this Serial Crystal something I can replace
  22. myself?  I've looked in the Apple IIgs Hardware Reference, but
  23. was unable to located this Serial Crystal.  There is, however, a
  24. crystal to the right of the Memory Expansion slow (looking at
  25. the ROM 1 256K mother board from the front end) that's labled
  26. 3.xxx Mhz.  Is this it?  I would hate to go in and have them tell me
  27. I have to pay $300 for a mother board swap.

  29. It's actually very ironic; I have had AppleCare for the whole system
  30. for the past 5 years, and it expired about 6 months ago. At that
  31. time, right before it expired, I took the GS to the Apple Tech
  32. for a complete check-up, and they told me the system was perfect,
  33. so I didn't bother to renew it, thinking it's going to last me
  34. forever now.  I never even used the AppleCare once during those
  35. 5 years, and now, I might have to spend more money :(
