  13.      My daughter was working on a project for school this weekend.
  14. She was using Micro-Gnu Emacs 2a and AmigaDOS 1.3.2 on an Amiga 1000
  15. with a hard drive, a Wedge controller, SOTS 2 Meg board, ConMan and
  16. DMouse 1.20. Unfortunately she never saved her work, and last night
  17. when she asked me to show her how to set up Promise, we discovered
  18. what acts like a layers library lockup. :-(  I can't open the (two)
  19. iconified MG2a instances, and I think I caused a requester to try to
  20. pop-up from the shell.

  22.      Of course the nicest way to fix the problem would be to figure
  23. out how to unlock it from the shell (if I can get a prompt back), but
  24. even then every useful tool I can think of opens a window.  (The
  25. behavior is that I can resize the shell window, and move the MG2a
  26. icons/windows around, and ConMan is active in the shell, but Workbench
  27. can't update anything, and validator.device does nothing if I swap
  28. floppies.

  30.     Absent a miracle like that, I figure I will have to nerve pinch
  31. then try to recover the text from FAST RAM.  I have another Amiga at
  32. home so I can create a custom boot disk if that is a good idea, but I
  33. assume that booting from the current boot disk will not overwrite
  34. anything I care about.  (It's what happens next that gets touchy, but
  35. anything smaller than MG2a will probably be safe.)  If I had a small
  36. program to copy FAST RAM to the hard drive, that should do the trick.

  39.      Also, does anyone know of an upgrade to or replacement for
  40. billsdisk.device?

  42.     (Use e-mail for suggestions of how to recover the data, and
  43. /dev/null for posts telling me I'm out of luck or to upgrade to
  44. AmigaDOS 2.1.  While she was working on the paper, I was arranging for
  45. the local dealer to install a Kwickstart board in this machine for
  46. Christmas...but I need to recover the data first. Hmmmm...Hardware
  47. upgrade suggestions should go the same place, since I will probably
  48. get a 4000 and a 1200 under the upgrade deal, but this machine will be
  49. in my daughter's room for a year or two longer. :-)
