- The original poster was asking whether he should buy a used A500 or a
- more expensive new A1200. I'm not sure what kind of deal was being
- offered with the A500, but I've been struggling with a similiar question.
-
- I bought a used A500 back in July, picked up a Supradrive 500XP, added
- a MegaChip chipram expansion and DCTV, and have had a lot of fun since.
-
- I paid about $200 for a KS2.04 equipped A500, $300 for the Supradrive
- with 2meg/Quantum 52 and $180 for the 2meg chipram and ECS Denise.
-
- If I decide to upgrade to the A1200, about $500 worth of hardware will
- not be usable with the A1200. The $200 SCSI HD may become useful when
- a SCSI adapter is eventually built for the A1200. BTW I have 2 Q52's.
-
- (An after thought, could I use parnet? I don't know anything about
- this network system. Perhaps this would let me use my two Quantum
- drives and other SCSI devices on an A1200 by passing through the
- A500? )
-
-
- The A1200 with no HardDrive is $600. Add an IDE HD (I'd rather not)
- and boost the price at least a couple hundred dollars. Add another
- SCSI card, and non-chip ram for even more dollars. Add in the cost
- of an appropriate monitor.
-
- I recently purchased a Mitsubishi 1381A for use with my A500
- (Anyone know where I can get a cable?) and then realized that this
- monitor would be fine for an AGA machine. The weight swings a little
- closer to buying an A1200.
-
- What I've been wanting to buy for the last 3 months is the
- '040 accelerator being advertised by Progressive Peripherals and
- Software. This would greatly improve my ability to use Imagine
- and Art Department Pro. But with the company burning to the ground
- and mail order companies not knowing when the product will ship,
- I'm sitting here wondering what I should do.
-
- Buy a 32 bit chip ram machine which would be ideal for my video
- interests and settle for the '020 compromise, or buy the Progressive '040
- for my A500 and wait until I can afford an A4000 tower.
-
- My inclination is to buy the Progressive '040 with 4 or 8 meg of ram
- and wait for a really good power-up program to buy an A1200.
-
- An A1200 with only 2meg of chip is useless for my ADPro needs. I already
- have 2meg of Chip and 2meg of fast and ADPro still is unsatisfied.
-
- Further (to make a long post longer) I don't intend to sell my A500
- as it has depreciated to the point of being a give-away.
-
- Just a few of my randomly strung together thoughts,
