- BE>in hardware. Just like every workstation has a unique hostid.
- BE>That would allow software vendors to provide software that is
- BE>tied to that hostid or multiple hostids.
- BE>
-
- And when the chip that produces the id fails ?
-
- I had that happen around here . the replacement chip cost US , the
- AUTHORISED REPAIR CENTER for that machine at the time , $1000 US for a PAL
- with it's verification fuse blown .
-
- BE>Some people complain that this prevents them from chucking their
- BE>hardware and moving their software to a newer machine, but I have
- BE>found that the turnaround time that is necessary to obtain a brand
- BE>new license key from every Unix software vendors that I have dealt
- BE>with has been less than half an hour, especially if you have a FAX
- BE>machine.
- BE>
-
- even those you bought over the BBS's , or the mailorder houses or
- clearinghouse ?
-
- WHAT ?! you never bought your UNIX applications in places like that ?
-
- BE>The only problem is that for Commodore to do so would offend the
- BE>target market and it would hurt their hardware sales. Since they
- BE>are not really in the software business their political powers
- BE>that be can't really be expected to care about that benefit it
- BE>could bring to their third party software vendors.

-
- the problemS would be
-
- -higher production cost for the hardware ; EACH MACHINE would need at least
- one chip unique to it . not desireable in a low cost machine
-
- -administration cost of the scheme like when replacement numbers are needed
- for both hardware and software vendors .
-
-
-
- you are falling prey of the idea that what is good in one case MUST be good
- in all cases . not here . what works in a multithousand dollar machine
- market does NOT make sense in a cut throat home market .
-
- in this case , serializing of EACH machine's software is simply NOT
- practical .
