- I just recently started using a hand scanner that I've had for
- a while now and I have some questions:
-
- First, the scanner appears to be "old stock". The various dates
- are around 1990. The version of Touch-Up is something like vers. 1.4.
- The model number is JS-105-1M. This is a grey scale scanner, nominally
- giving 64 levels.
-
- The output is generally dark. In character mode it's clean enough
- but in "photo" mode I have to turn up the "light" control all they
- way and it still tends to be dark.
-
- It's SLOW. It's even slow in character mode really, but at
- 400 DPI it's essentially un-usable. I don't think it's humanly
- possible to move your hands that slowly for more than an inch.
- Actually, I can rarely get an inch done at that speed. 300 DPI
- is barely better.
-
- The power supply is for 120VAC 15 Watts in, and nominally
- supplies 12VDC at 780 mA. I haven't tested it yet. I have good
- accurate testing equipment for voltages -- I just haven't gotten
- around to it.
-
- My first question is about the power supply. Is this the
- correct power supply? There's no clue from the literature. Actually,
- I expect it is since it's unlikely that a piece of computer equipment
- would be made using more than 12 volts. It's possible, but unlikely.
- On the other hand, does anybody know if I could bump the voltage up,
- say to 15 - 19 volts safely? Would that increase the brightness of
- the lights and thus bring the grey scale into a more useable range?
-
- About the speed of the parallel port. Freinds have told me
- that hand scanners on other computers are faster. Since they all
- look alike, I expect that the speed problem in the Amiga is the
- parallel port. I don't know that much about parallel ports. As
- far as I know, there's no arbitrary "speed limit" on parallel ports.
- The speed is determined only by signal hand-shakes. So the speed
- is effectively "as fast as you can get it to work". Would changing
- from a standard 68000 to a 33 mHz 68030 CPU in an Amiga 500 speed
- up the centronics port and thus speed up the scanner?
-
- Recent hand scanners advertise 256 grey levels. Is this
- just a software change or is it a combination of hardware and
- software changes?
-
- Recent ads in British magazines say that a colour hand scanner
- is available for the A500. Will anybody in North America be importing
- these? Has anybody used one yet?
