- The other day I happened to glom onto a couple of Radio Shack Minimus7 compact
- bracket-mount speakers (they're in cast alumininum housings, intended for use
- in an automobile, I think). They seem to have really good base response for
- their size (BCB Music from the recent Fish disk not only rotates the furniture,
- it sets the curtains on fire). I set them up, one on each side of an A3000.
- While making preparations to hook them up, I had them both on one side of my
- Diamondscan AUM-1381A and noticed that they really hosed the monitor's color
- purity. So I said to myself "Self, methinks we better check these things with
- the lab's Gaussmeter." The bottom forward surface of the speaker had 40 Gauss
- and the lower front had 70 Gauss for flux leakage, according to the RFL gmeter.
- I decided that that was not enough flux to seriously influence a floppy disk;
- the surprise was to come later. The right speaker was sitting on top of a new
- Supra FaxModem. When I went to ATDT out with the modem, the modem reported
- "NO DIALTONE." Panic began to set in [with me, not with the modem]. I thought
- "Oh crap, the stupid squirrels have chewed their way into the phone cable and
- the water from melting and freezing snow has shorted out my tele wire again!"
- But a simple line check with the regular phone set indicated it was ok. Then
- I remembered that the modem was under one of the Minimus7s. I removed it.
- Poof! the modem recovered its ability to dial out. I haven't looked inside
- the modem to see what's being affected (what the heck, it's still seriously
- under warranty). It might be that there's a biased reed switch in there.
- So if you're having trouble getting your Supra FaxModem to answer the phone
- reliably, this is something you might want to look for...
