- The PPP protocol can work either over synchronous, dedicated links (like
- a T1 link) or over an asynchronous dial up line (a modem). The protocol
- is the same in either case.

- There are issues in a dial up PPP configuration that don't appear in a
- dedicated setup; in particular, the software may have to issue some dialing
- commands to bring the connection up, and it may bring the connection down
- for reasons other than failure - for instance, to save money on long distance
- bills. Dialing a phone is *not* part of the PPP protocol as such.
