  61. l.  JOB SUMMARY
  62.  
  63. The Professor will provide leadership in the areas of software engineering
  64. education, research and industrial liaison.
  65.  
  66. The Department of Computer Science is a multi campus department with an
  67. enrolment of approximately 650 equivalent full time students in its courses
  68. and a staff establishment of approximately 55.
  69.  
  70. The following courses are offered by the Department:
  71.  
  72.     .  Bachelor of  Applied Science (Computer Science).
  73.     .  Bachelor of Applied Science Honours (Computer Science).
  74.     .  Graduate Diploma  in Computing Studies.
  75.     .  Graduate Diploma in Knowledge Based Systems.
  76.     .  Post Graduate Certificate in Software Engineering.
  77.     .  Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Applied Science in 
  78.        Information Systems.
  79.     .  Master of Applied Science (by Coursework) in Information Technology.
  80.     .  Master of Applied Science and PhD (by Research).
  81.     .  A range of service subjects to other courses.

  83. In addition to the above programs, the Department has a heavy involvement
  84. in research and development principally in the areas of database systems,
  85. computer graphics, artificial intelligence and software engineering. 
  86. Collaborative links exist between the Department and other related
  87. Engineering and Science departments both at RMIT and Melbourne University.

  89. The teaching programs of the Department cover a wide range of computing
  90. areas including programming languages and methodology, computer
  91. architecture, systems analysis and design, theory of computation, database
  92. systems, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, software engineering,
  93. formal methods, data communications and networks, operating systems,
  94. systems programming and compiler design.

  96. The Department operates two multi-processor Encore Multimax computer
  97. systems (to be replaced in 1993), a Sun 4 mini-computer and a VAX ll/750
  98. all running UNIX.  A wide range of computer laboratories and networked
  99. workstations are available for teaching and research.  Students also make
  100. use of the University's Computer Centre mainframes and super-computer
  101. facilities.

  105. 2.  QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  106.  
  107. The applicant should have: 
  108.  
  109. .   A higher degree (preferably a PhD) in Computer Science, 
  110.     Software Systems Engineering or a closely related discipline; 
  111.  
  112. .   A distinguished international reputation either in the field of
  113.     software engineering theory or software engineering practice;
  114.  
  115. .   A record of excellence in both the teaching of software engineering and
  116.     its industrial practice;
  117.  
  118. .   An established history of publication, particularly in one or more of
  119.     the following areas:
  120.  
  121.     -  formal description techniques,
  122.     -  validation and verification,
  123.     -  real-time systems development, 
  124.     -  object-oriented technology,
  125.     -  programming language design & implementation.

  129. 3.  DUTIES
  130.  
  131. The successful applicant will be responsible to the Head of Department and
  132. will:
  133.  
  134. 3.1    Coordinate and participate in the teaching of software engineering
  135. courses at 
  136.     the undergraduate and postgraduate level and carry out related academic
  137. functions; 
  138.  
  139. 3.2    Supervise projects and theses primarily in the area of software
  140. engineering;
  141.     
  142. 3.3    Build a solid basis of software engineering research in the Department
  143. and attract 
  144.     funding for that research;
  145.  
  146. 3.4    Establish collaborative links with other academic or research
  147. institutions and industry;
  148.  
  149. 3.5    Perform administrative duties associated with the tasks outlined
  150. above;    
  151.  
  152. 3.6    Perform other appropriate duties as required by Head of Department.

  155. will coordinate activities in the area of software engineering at both the 
  156. City and Bundoora campuses.
