- Hi all,
- I am repairing an IBM brand drive, and need a little help. The drive
- had Coke (tm) spilled on it while it was running, and fried the
- controller board. After dis-assembling the controller board (an
- interesting experience), cleaning the burned areas, doing a little
- solder work to fix burned traces, I've gotten the drive to spin up
- and respond to commands. I can read and write to sector 0.
- I was ecstatic! After all, this drive was presumed DOA.
- But, after breathing life back into it, I find I have NO info about
- the drive! Without more info, I can't tell my computer enough about
- it to make use of it. Here is what I do know about it:
-
- Vendor : IBM
- Product : 0661371 Rev : B O
- ANSI version : 2
- ECMA verion : 0
- ISO version : 0
- Capacity: 312Mb
- Sector Size: 512 bytes
- Last Sector: 625355
- Supports Synchronous data transfers.
- Supports Linked commands.
- Device uses hard resets.
-
- This is a 3 1/2" drive.
- You must issue the Start Unit ($1B) Command before the drive will
- spin up.
-
- While the Capacity is 312Mb, the calculated capacity is 305Mb... and
- IBM considders this drive a 320Mb capacity drive!
-
- I'm looking for any and all info on the drive. Things like:
- Number of cylinders.
- Number of surfaces.
- Number of sectors per track.
- Access time.
- Rotation speed.
-
- I've done a Mode Sense ($1A) on the drive to get the number of blocks
- and block length. Usually, this command gives Vendor Parameters as
- well, one of which is the Geometry of the drive ($84)... However,
- this parameter is not present. The only Vendor Parameters present are:
- $81 = Error Recovery Parameters
- $82 = Disconnect/Reconnect Control
- $87 = ?
- $88 = ?
- $80 = ?
-
- Also, there are some straps on the back of the drive that I can't
- identify:
- :::.:
- 124ab
-
- 124 = SCSI ID
- a = ?
- b = ?
-
- Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
-
- Also, is there any place I could get a list of ALL the Vendor
- Parameters for the Mode Sense? I know of a few, but I'd really
- like to know more...
-
- Thanks in advance.
