- I have an older ISC UNIX (2.0.2). I have no hardware (yet) to
- run it on. I plan to go 'Adaptec' SCSI for the hard disk(s).
-
- I first considered ISA bus hardware, since I am clear ISC 2.0.2
- will run on it. I would use Adaptec 1542b ISA SCSI host adapter.
-
- I am now considering EISA bus hardware. I would use Adaptec 1740
- (1742?) EISA SCSI host adapter.
-
- 1. Will ISC 2.0.2 run with AHA 1740/1742? I have dialed in to
- Adaptec BBS. The BBS says 1740/1742 has 'embedded support'
- for ISC 3.0, but my ISC is 2.0.2 (ISC 2.0.2 will support the
- 1542b, ISA).
-
- 2. The AHA 1740/1742 has '1542 compatibility mode'? Does this
- mean since ISC 2.0.2 will support the 1542b (ISA), that 2.0.2
- will work with 1740/1742 (EISA) if the 1740/1742 is run in
- 1542 compatibility mode?
-
- 3. Assuming #2 (above) is true, are EISA bus throughput gains
- apparent (over ISA bus) with respect to disk data transfers?
-
- 4. I will be running ISC 2.0.2 UNIX 'single user' (although it is
- multiuser license). Will going EISA still provide noticeable
- improvement (over ISA) in terms of disk data transfers? Is
- EISA worth the added costs over ISA (EISA motherboard + EISA
- SCSI disk controller)?
-
- I want to make a smart hardware purchase 'the first time'. Any
- insights/help with these EISA/ISA SCSI questions is most appreciated.
