  17. If you want to drive a serially intrfaced printer from an IBM PC
  18. parallel port, you have to get a parallel-to-serial converter box.
  19. Such things are a fairly standard item; consult your local supplier
  20. of computer accessories or order from a vendor such as Inmac or
  21. Black Box Corporation.  Some units offer buffering of output data.

  23. Or you can use the serial port on your IBM PC clone.  The MS-DOS
  24. MODE command can be used to set up the serial port.  This typically
  25. involves the ",P" option of the MODE command, so consult your
  26. system documentation for the proper syntax.

  28. In wiring a serial cable, you'll need a null-modem configuration,
  29. since both the PC and the LA50 are RS-232-C DTE devices.  You can buy
  30. a little "null-modem" adapter from Radio Shack if your have only a
  31. straight cable.

  33. A file containing information on DIP-switch settings of the DEC LA50
  34. printer is available for anonymous FTP from CS.UTK.EDU in "pub/shuford".
  35. You'll need this information to set the serial data rate.  The default,
  36. however, is 4800 bps.

  38. The LA50 print mechanisum is similar to the original Applewriter and
  39. certain Okidata units, but DEC used different firmware to tailor the
  40. behaviour.  Among other things, the LA50 supports SIXEL graphics.
