-
- If you want to drive a serially intrfaced printer from an IBM PC
- parallel port, you have to get a parallel-to-serial converter box.
- Such things are a fairly standard item; consult your local supplier
- of computer accessories or order from a vendor such as Inmac or
- Black Box Corporation. Some units offer buffering of output data.
-
- Or you can use the serial port on your IBM PC clone. The MS-DOS
- MODE command can be used to set up the serial port. This typically
- involves the ",P" option of the MODE command, so consult your
- system documentation for the proper syntax.
-
- In wiring a serial cable, you'll need a null-modem configuration,
- since both the PC and the LA50 are RS-232-C DTE devices. You can buy
- a little "null-modem" adapter from Radio Shack if your have only a
- straight cable.
-
- A file containing information on DIP-switch settings of the DEC LA50
- printer is available for anonymous FTP from CS.UTK.EDU in "pub/shuford".
- You'll need this information to set the serial data rate. The default,
- however, is 4800 bps.
-
- The LA50 print mechanisum is similar to the original Applewriter and
- certain Okidata units, but DEC used different firmware to tailor the
- behaviour. Among other things, the LA50 supports SIXEL graphics.
