- I owned one for a couple weeks, then returned it. That doesn't mean I
- don't think it's a good printer, though. I'll (hopefully) be getting a
- Laserjet 4M soon.

- It prints very good color for the price, and even the black-and-white
- output is OK for the price, but it isn't as good as a laser printer. If
- you don't need color, you can get a laser printer in the same price range.
- It's also slow, and very sensitive to the kind of paper you put in it
- (some papers, even papers which claim to be "ink-jet" paper, produce
- *terrible* results). There are cheap papers which work well for
- black-and-white, but good color prints require expensive ($1/sheet) glossy
- paper. Also, HP no longer supports label printing in the Deskwriters.

-
- The Deskwriter itself doesn't support PostScript at all. There are,
- however, programs (e.g. Freedom of the Press) which can translate PostScript
- into a language the Deskwriter can understand. These programs are
- extremely slow, however, compared to printing on a printer with built-in
- PostScript.

-
- Yes, you'll need special drivers for color on any platform. If you're
- using Windows, you're probably thinking about the Deskjet 550C and not the
- Deskwriter. The Deskwriter is for the Mac, and the Deskjet is for PCs,
- but otherwise they are pretty similar. It's quite difficult to use a
- Deskjet on a Mac or a Deskwriter on a PC, but it can be done. I don't
- believe there's any way currently to use a Deskjet 550C on a Mac and get
- color, however, and I also doubt that the reverse is possible at this time.

-
- It depends on your needs. Is high-quality black-and-white output more
- important to you, or color? Is speed important? Do you print scanned
- images or mainly text and line-art?
