- Hi there,
-
- Since so many people seem to have a lot to say about Ehud and, especially, Carl,
- maybe it's time for me to say something about it too, since I've recently been
- the subject of some of Carls critized articles. I don't refer to the 'Vms MOVE'
- messages, I just use it as an example.
-
- When I asked for a Vms MOVE command I thought it was very clear, I didn't even
- think about giving more information; MOVE is as clear to me as DELETE, RENAME
- or COPY etc. Several people replied telling me BACKUP/DELETE might be what I
- was looking for (and they were right), only one replied asking me what I meant
- with MOVE, indeed: Carl. He took the time to send me a kind question, just
- trying to find out how he could help me. I told him I already got the answer I
- was looking for, posted a general 'thanx' (some people missed that, but that
- can happen) and for me the story was over.
-
- But then a long discussion started on the net where people were guessing
- 'what the original poster meant'. One of Carls articles caused a reaction of
- me that wasn't necessary; he wrote something I didn't like and that's where
- the flaming started. I don't recall the exact words, but there are *more* than
- enough similar examples available. We all know many of our problems have been
- solved by him, and we also know he is not always very tactful. I knew it but
- I still wrote that article.
-
- The point is, when Carl says something about VMS, you can bet he's right, and
- when he says you asked a question incorrectly, most of the time he's right too,
- because you might be looking for one answer, not knowing there are several
- solutions available for your problem, depending on what *exactly* you want. I
- started to realize that; everybody should.
-
- The Net is an anarchy, and the best description I've ever read about that is
- "Anarchy is when you have to accept someone calls you a shithead." I don't
- know who said it (I've got it from one of the articles in
- news.announce.newusers, I think many people here should read that group every
- now and then :-}), but there's a lot of thruth in it; don't try to change
- someone else's writing style, ignore it if you dislike it, just be grateful
- for every problem that's solved by somebody who doesn't write his articles the
- way you should.
-
- Oscar.
