- I for one am getting goddamn sick and tired of listening to all the
- flaming and criticism of people. If you don't like someone's comments,
- do us *all* a favor and do it through E-Mail. If someone says something
- totally stupid, *please* don't waste bandwidth to tell people that
- they said something stupid; tell *them*.
-
- Maybe you don't like someone asking for a piece of information in
- a way that - in your opinion - they should know the information or
- know how to find it. It is *not necessarily* a criminal offense for
- someone not to know a critical piece of information related to their
- work in question:
-
- - Some people are too busy fighting fires to be able to take the time
- to do the experimentation to find out the answer. This is known
- as the "when you're up to your ass in alligators it's hard to remember
- that you were supposed to be draining the swamp" theory.
-
- - Some people ended up getting positions such as system manager or
- lead programmer *by default* i.e. nobody else wanted it or knew how
- to do the work.
-
- - Some people end up having the position of System Manager dumped
- on them because management doesn't want to pay for another warm body
- so the work ends up being added to the list of things to do (and don't
- forget, for many shops, programmers are on salary and are not paid
- for overtime.)
-
- - A lot of people don't have the knowledge or skills to do all the
- work they have to and are undergoing "on the job training" and don't
- know all the tricks yet. You had to start from scratch, too. Some
- people haven't even learned how to program a VCR or stop the clock
- from blinking 12:00. They may be extremely competent managers of
- a department but totally neophyte system managers.
-
- Can we have a little less flaming around here?
