  10. I for one am getting goddamn sick and tired of listening to all the 
  11. flaming and criticism of people.  If you don't like someone's comments, 
  12. do us *all* a favor and do it through E-Mail.  If someone says something 
  13. totally stupid, *please* don't waste bandwidth to tell people that 
  14. they said something stupid; tell *them*.

  16. Maybe you don't like someone asking for a piece of information in 
  17. a way that - in your opinion - they should know the information or 
  18. know how to find it.  It is *not necessarily* a criminal offense for 
  19. someone not to know a critical piece of information related to their 
  20. work in question:

  22. - Some people are too busy fighting fires to be able to take the time
  23.   to do the experimentation to find out the answer.  This is known
  24.   as the "when you're up to your ass in alligators it's hard to remember
  25.   that you were supposed to be draining the swamp" theory.

  27. - Some people ended up getting positions such as system manager or  
  28. lead programmer *by default* i.e. nobody else wanted it or knew how 
  29. to do the work.

  31. - Some people end up having the position of System Manager dumped  
  32. on them because management doesn't want to pay for another warm body 
  33. so the work ends up being added to the list of things to do (and don't 
  34. forget, for many shops, programmers are on salary and are not paid 
  35. for overtime.)

  37. - A lot of people don't have the knowledge or skills to do all the  
  38. work they have to and are undergoing "on the job training" and don't 
  39. know all the tricks yet.  You had to start from scratch, too.  Some 
  40. people haven't even learned how to program a VCR or stop the clock 
  41. from blinking 12:00.  They may be extremely competent managers of 
  42. a department but totally neophyte system managers.
