  13. To all the people who likes to flame others for posting  poorly described
  14. questions which can easily be answered via TFM or HELP:

  16.   - Noone is born with VMS knowledge, we all have to learn it. We
  17.     quote (probably bad translation, but... ): It is human to
  18.     make mistakes but divine to forgive !
  19.  
  20.   - TFM and HELP is very usefull, when you have learned your way through
  21.     them, but if you have not and you also have misunderstood the reason
  22.     behind your problem (which is very often the case for problems!), then
  23.     it is difficult to get on the rigth track.

  25. Another way of looking at the problem: who benefits from flames ?
  26. The "victim" gets angry and chooses either to ignore them or never
  27. post to INFO-VAX again! The readers which did not know the answer
  28. finds the flamer an arrogant ........! The readers which did know the
  29. answer finds the flame boring to read! The flamer may think he
  30. feels better, but actually he just get more frustrated!

  32. So when someone ask a polite question (and most of the posters do
  33. ask rather polite and admit openly, that they are a beginner), then
  34. give them a polite answer (and maybe some hints about how they can
  35. solve their next problem themselves!).

  37. Reserve the flames for people answering questions incomplete and/or
  38. incorrectly !

  40. To all the people who have a question, that they want to post:

  42. Carl Lydicks points about how to post a question are not so bad !

  44. Besides lowering the blood-preasure for certain individuals then YOU
  45. WILL GET MORE AND BETTER ANSWERS if your posting includes:
  46.  
  47.   - a detailed description of the problem
  48.   - software names and versions
  49.   - exact error-messages and/or log-files
  50.   - a valid email-address
  51.  
  52. The first 3 is rather obvious - to give a good answer you need to know the
  53. facts. With f.ex. programming problems then post the smallest possible
  54. code-fragment, that can be ran independently and will show the problem.

  56. A valid email-address allows an answer to be send directly to you. It is
  57. quite common to post answers both to the list and directly to the original
  58. poster. But sometimes you want only to send the answer to the original poster
  59. (if you consider the problem to be of no general interest). An the from-field
  60. is very often useless.

  62. At last a few general comments:

  64.   - Do not pick at peoples language. A lot of people do not have english
  65.     as their language of birth. My english may not be perfect, but it is
  66.     probably better than your danish :-)

  68.   - The argument "he has never posted some answers to this list, so he
  69.     should keep his mouth shot" is not valid. You do not get a rigth to
  70.     decide what is good behaviour on INFO-VAX just because the have a
  71.     large VMS knowledge and are friendly enough to sepnd some time sharing
  72.     it with other.

  74.   - Wheter a poster of a question has subscribed to the list or not is
  75.     rather irrelevant. He would benefit from it, but if he decide against
  76.     it, then it is his decision. There may be several reasons for such
  77.     a decision (ordinary laziness, communication expenses, lack of time etc.).
