- My impression is that usually the message files (which contain the
- messages like "%DIRECT-W-NOFILES, no files found") and text/help
- files are translated, but that often text embedded in the program
- is not. This leads to a somewhat schizofrenic environment, although
- VMS translated into some European languages would not be too bad
- because of the cognates. (Many of the untranslated text strings are
- things like the word "Directory" in a directory listing). Chinese
- VMS is hilarious however; it gives the impression of being half in
- English and half in Chinese :). You do need a special terminal that
- can display Chinese characters to be able to use it very well.
-
- It would be possible to customize VMS so that the message files and
- text/help files could be put in separate directories and have logical
- name searchlists so that each user could see them in his or her native
- language, but I don't think DEC supports this in the general case;
- my impression is that the standard configurations allow you to set up
- a per-user environment that is English-OR-Chinese or English-OR-French
- or whatever, but not English-OR-French-OR-Chinese (in other words,
- pick English and any other single language). This may be out of date;
- you should contact DEC if you want to have a version of VMS with
- support for multiple languages, it's possible that it's supported now.
-
- If you want information on a particular national version of VMS, you
- should probably contact the DEC office in the appropriate country
- (France in your example).
