- Dear netters,
-
- We've tentatively decided to get a 256 meg 7610 for administrative work
- and are looking for input from any of you on your experiences with it
- and what to watch out for, as well as answers to a few questions:
-
- We understand the machine comes completely ready for use as an Alpha
- processor except that the cpu board is a 35 VUP VAX, and we can put it
- into our CI Cluster. The board can be swapped later for an alpha board.
-
- Questions:
-
- 1. We operate 2 DMB32's and a KLESI in the BIbus on a 6230 (the machine that
- the 7610 is to replace). The DMB32 parallel ports drive 2 LP37 1200lpm
- impact printers.
- The KLESI drives my TU81 and my AVIV 8mm tape cartridge unit.
-
- But DEC says you cannot have a BIbus on a 7610. They say would be
- 'timing problems' and it would 'drag down the 7610 speed'.
- Given that as true, how to run my TU81/AVIV 8mm and my parallel-driven LP37
- printers ???
-
- The only solution we've come across on the printers is to connect the
- DEMNA Ethernet card on the 7610 to a DecBridge 90 and come off 1 side of
- the bridge to a DecServer 250 and off its 2 parallel ports to the 2 LP37's.
- Connect the other side of the bridge to an existing DELNI.
-
- I really want to keep the simplicity of running the printers as I do now
- but I guess that's not possible.
-
- On the tape, the only solution so far is to swap the TU81 for a TA81
- and run it off an HSC5X-CA card in the HSC70, and swap the KLESI-driven
- AVIV for an HSC or KDM70 or KFMSA driven model.
- (We have a 3 node CI Cluster.)
-
- 2. Any glitches to watch out for in the VMS 5.5.2 and 7610 combo ?
-
- 3. Any thing to watch for during the vms upgrade from 5.4 to 5.5 ?
- (CSC says the 7610 will only run under VMS 5.5.2)
-
- Thanks much for any info you can give me.
-
- My return address is probably not replyable (getting PMDF soon), so please
- send answers to my address shown below.
