  15. I notice that I cannot type:

  17.        telnet name.name.name portnumber
  18.  
  19. (It complains that it can't find a host record.)  But I can type:
  20.  
  21.        telnet name.name.name
  22. and    telnet number.number.number.number portnumber
  23.  
  24. Why does it understand one and not the other?  And is there anything *as a user
  25. not a systems manager* I can do about it?  Is there a way to feed it the 
  26. parameters in a way that it will understand that it should translate the host
  27. name to the numeric address and then apply the port number?  Or am I misdiag-
  28. nosing the symptoms?
