  60. l.  JOB SUMMARY

  62. The Professor will provide leadership in the areas of software engineering
  63. education, research and industrial liaison.
  64.  
  65. The Department of Computer Science is a multi campus department with an
  66. enrolment of approximately 650 equivalent full time students in its courses
  67. and a staff establishment of approximately 55.
  68.  
  69. The following courses are offered by the Department:
  70.  
  71.     .  Bachelor of  Applied Science (Computer Science).
  72.     .  Bachelor of Applied Science Honours (Computer Science).
  73.     .  Graduate Diploma  in Computing Studies.
  74.     .  Graduate Diploma in Knowledge Based Systems.
  75.     .  Post Graduate Certificate in Software Engineering.
  76.     .  Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Applied Science in 
  77.        Information Systems.
  78.     .  Master of Applied Science (by Coursework) in Information Technology.
  79.     .  Master of Applied Science and PhD (by Research).

  82. In addition to the above programs, the Department has a heavy involvement
  83. in research and development principally in the areas of database systems,
  84. computer graphics, artificial intelligence and software engineering. 
  85. Collaborative links exist between the Department and other related
  86. Engineering and Science departments both at RMIT and Melbourne University.

  88. The teaching programs of the Department cover a wide range of computing
  89. areas including programming languages and methodology, computer
  90. architecture, systems analysis and design, theory of computation, database
  91. systems, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, software engineering,
  92. formal methods, data communications and networks, operating systems,
  93. systems programming and compiler design.

  95. The Department operates two multi-processor Encore Multimax computer
  96. systems (to be replaced in 1993), a Sun 4 mini-computer and a VAX ll/750
  97. all running UNIX.  A wide range of computer laboratories and networked
  98. workstations are available for teaching and research.  Students also make
  99. use of the University's Computer Centre mainframes and super-computer
  100. facilities.

  104. 2.  QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  106. The applicant should have: 
  107.  
  108. .   A higher degree (preferably a PhD) in Computer Science, 
  109.     Software Systems Engineering or a closely related discipline; 
  110.  
  111. .   A distinguished international reputation either in the field of
  112.     software engineering theory or software engineering practice;
  113.  
  114. .   A record of excellence in both the teaching of software engineering and
  115.     its industrial practice;
  116.  
  117. .   An established history of publication, particularly in one or more of
  118.     the following areas:
  119.  
  120.     -  formal description techniques,
  121.     -  validation and verification,
  122.     -  real-time systems development, 
  123.     -  object-oriented technology,
  124.     -  programming language design & implementation.

  128. 3.  DUTIES
  129.  
  130. The successful applicant will be responsible to the Head of Department and
  131. will:
  132.  
  133. 3.1    Coordinate and participate in the teaching of software engineering
  134. courses at 
  135.     the undergraduate and postgraduate level and carry out related academic
  136. functions; 
  137.  
  138. 3.2    Supervise projects and theses primarily in the area of software
  139. engineering;
  140.     
  141. 3.3    Build a solid basis of software engineering research in the Department
  142. and attract 
  143.     funding for that research;
  144.  
  145. 3.4    Establish collaborative links with other academic or research
  146. institutions and industry;
  147.  
  148. 3.5    Perform administrative duties associated with the tasks outlined
  149. above;    
  150.  
  151. 3.6    Perform other appropriate duties as required by Head of Department.

  154. will coordinate activities in the area of software engineering at both the 
  155. City and Bundoora campuses.
