- Have just gotten through reading the 3 main volumes of documentation
- for IBM OS/2 Advanced LAN Version 3... My task was to discover what
- needed to be changed to make the product as secure as possible. My
- simple comment is - IBM, please put it all in one PLACE!
-
- Volume 1 was installation. Much needs to be figured out, because of
- all of the possible conditions that IBM feels need to be referenced.
- Volume 2 was parameters. Most need to be changed.
- Volume 3 was procedures. Most need to be waded through to figure out
- what is needed re a secure install.
-
- Please, give me one simple start to finish list, without all of the
- 'IF YOU HAVE XYZ INSTALLED..." Put those in a separate chapter (or 2
- or 3 or 4 or ...). Assume I have a plain vanilla computer, without a
- prior version, with enough hard drive space, and with OS/2 Version
- 2.0. Go from there, and give me a nice, simple, install procedure,
- or is this too much to ask for? Find a copy of the INSTALL for
- WordPerfect, or Windows, or almost any NON-IBM product, and try to
- emulate it. DO NOT GIVE ME MAIN-FRAME TYPE documentation. (Much less
- a stack of 8.5"*11" paper 15 cm or so high, giving me a hernia to
- boot, of and, ifs and buts.)
-
- And even worse, I tried looking up security in the master index and
- found two minor references, with nothing that meant I could have a
- secure installation.
-
- BTW, the default installation does NOT have an audit trail, does NOT
- disable GUEST properly, does not expire passwords, and sets the
- minimum password length at an insulting (and easily attacked) minimum.
- It is NOT secure. I'm not even certain that once 'correctly'
- configured (if I have figured it out 'correctly') that it will be
- secure. Nor do I have a way to determine that I have figured it out
- correctly.
-
- If ANYONE out there, including IBM (any country or state or facility
- can jump in, including Boca Raton), has the setup for MAXIMUM
- security, please provide it, so I can determine if I have guessed
- correctly.
-
- Thanks in advance for any replys, and feel free to disagree with MY
- views on the quality of the printed documentation.
