- Funny you should ask. :-)

- The EPA has a new program in the U.S. called "EnergyStar," and they've
- worked with several computer makers (IBM and Apple, for example) to
- get energy conserving PCs to the market. PCs which meet the EPA
- requirements will be allowed to carry the "EnergyStar" logo. You
- should see these machines starting in 1993.

- I'm most familiar with the IBM machines that seem to be very close to
- introduction. IBM demonstrated them at Comdex (in something quite
- close to final form, but you never know). These machines are for the
- desktop, but they are light (notebook weight), have PCMCIA slots for
- expansion, have no fans, and run with pure CMOS components (including
- IBM's 486SLC processor). IBM demonstrated these desktops with the
- 10.5 inch flat panel active matrix color display -- the largest on the
- market, and now shipping with the ThinkPad 700C notebook -- but they
- also promise a power conserving monitor.
