- On the topic of mainframes not being needed anymore.......it isn't true. Most
- banks, large institutions/organisations, phone companies, simply couldn't
- provide the services they do today without mainframes. No other systems can
- support hundreds or thousands of users all accessing the same databases in
- real-time update modes. The sheer volume of transactions that a mainframe can
- process in a single second makes just about any other computer configuration
- look puny.
-
- Until recently, I was an MVS/CICS systems programmer for NZ's largest
- exporter. Our system had over 400 users nationally accessing a single,
- national database - updating it in real-time with most responses (95% +) being
- under 5 seconds. The Amdahl 5890 with dual-processors that was the heart of
- this system could only have been replaced by another mainframe. I know that
- banks have thousands of users all doing the same thing......not counting the
- ATM's you get your money out of.

-
- Big Iron is IBM's bread and butter. With oragnisations around the world
- requiring current, central access to ever-growing bases of information, the
- mainframe is fairly safe for a few years yet.
-
- But I do agree....the balance will shift. But mainframes are a long way from
- being dead.
