  12. I just got win NT running on my system, and after a few more reinstalls,
  13. was able to get NT and os/2 2.0 to run together. It's very simple: clear
  14. (format) your disk, install WIN NT, then install os/2 2.0 in dual boot mode.

  16. OK, thats the short version, now the details:
  17.  
  18. WIN NT does (as advertised) refuse to run with os/2 on the system. I tried
  19. it with os/2 in the first partition, and even in the last partition (ie,
  20. even with a perfectly good and active C: primary partition, NT refuses to
  21. run). Since both tries where with os/2 boot manager in a partition, I can't
  22. tell you (nor do I care) whether it was the boot manager or Os/2 itself
  23. that NT "objects" to.
  24. The exact behavior is that NT outputs a message "checking existing disk"
  25. then simply hangs up with the disk drive light on. I'll call this the
  26. "File Transfer Check" or FTC for short ;-)
  27. After reformatting the entire disk, NT boots just fine, with the message
  28. "The volume is clean" :)

  30. Now here is my setup:

  32. I installed, in order:
  33.  
  34. 1. vanilla DOS 5.0.
  35.  
  36. 2. Vanilla Windows 3.1
  37.  
  38. 3. Windows NT.
  39.  
  40. 4. OS/2 2.0, using dual boot and FAT system.
  41.  
  42. Before installing os/2, boot back to DOS (via NT's flexboot) and make the
  43. "shell" and "comspec" mods as described in the os/2 install manual.
  44. When done, dual boot out of os/2. You will boot up to NT's flexboot, 
  45. and from there can pick dos (or win 3.1) or windows NT.
  46. A mod you might wish to make is to set the file \boot.ini to writable, 
  47. edit it, and change the line "boot other operating system on C" to 
  48. "boot DOS 5.0 on C:".

  52. Flexboot will not boot os/2 2.0 from another partition, just as the NT
  53. manual states.

  55. Can boot manager be made to work with WIN NT ?

  57. I didn't try it, but there is a file "DOS+NT.OS2" in LIB 1 on compuserve
  58. that explains a method whereby norton can be used to make the boot manager
  59. acceptable to NT. Apparently it works by setting the partition type for BM
  60. to "unused" (yes, by hiding it from NT).
