- I just got win NT running on my system, and after a few more reinstalls,
- was able to get NT and os/2 2.0 to run together. It's very simple: clear
- (format) your disk, install WIN NT, then install os/2 2.0 in dual boot mode.
-
- OK, thats the short version, now the details:
-
- WIN NT does (as advertised) refuse to run with os/2 on the system. I tried
- it with os/2 in the first partition, and even in the last partition (ie,
- even with a perfectly good and active C: primary partition, NT refuses to
- run). Since both tries where with os/2 boot manager in a partition, I can't
- tell you (nor do I care) whether it was the boot manager or Os/2 itself
- that NT "objects" to.
- The exact behavior is that NT outputs a message "checking existing disk"
- then simply hangs up with the disk drive light on. I'll call this the
- "File Transfer Check" or FTC for short ;-)
- After reformatting the entire disk, NT boots just fine, with the message
- "The volume is clean" :)
-
- Now here is my setup:
-
- I installed, in order:
-
- 1. vanilla DOS 5.0.
-
- 2. Vanilla Windows 3.1
-
- 3. Windows NT.
-
- 4. OS/2 2.0, using dual boot and FAT system.
-
- Before installing os/2, boot back to DOS (via NT's flexboot) and make the
- "shell" and "comspec" mods as described in the os/2 install manual.
- When done, dual boot out of os/2. You will boot up to NT's flexboot,
- and from there can pick dos (or win 3.1) or windows NT.
- A mod you might wish to make is to set the file \boot.ini to writable,
- edit it, and change the line "boot other operating system on C" to
- "boot DOS 5.0 on C:".
-
- Also tried:
-
- Flexboot will not boot os/2 2.0 from another partition, just as the NT
- manual states.
-
- Can boot manager be made to work with WIN NT ?
-
- I didn't try it, but there is a file "DOS+NT.OS2" in LIB 1 on compuserve
- that explains a method whereby norton can be used to make the boot manager
- acceptable to NT. Apparently it works by setting the partition type for BM
- to "unused" (yes, by hiding it from NT).
-
- AND FINALLY, TO MICROSOFT:
-
- It's getting hard for me to beleive that you all are wronged puppys in all
- this. I'm not mad. I just don't think you realize how childish this makes
- you look. :|
