  23. You're absolutely right.  However, the computers we've got were >already<
  24. designed, and economics dictate that we've gotta work with them for a year
  25. or so (perhaps more).  Turning it off is a great idea if it's just a client,
  26. and it won't be in use at all overnight.  However, if your PC (or computer)
  27. is also a server, and you have to leave it on, perhaps an investment in one
  28. of those screen-saving/energy-saving monitors would be worthwhile (it detects
  29. inactivity and shuts off the monitor -- much better than those silly software
  30. screensavers).

  32. Now if only hardware designers would put on the desktop what we've had in
  33. portables for years -- hard drives that shut off after X seconds of inactivity,
  34. 3v CPUs, perhaps even a keyboard that closes its circuit only when you type
  35. a key (so that, say, 70% of the time the keyboard isn't drawing any power
  36. at all), etc...
