- the key word here is "beta". IBM seem to be following microsofts lead
- in producing beta releases on CD. why? because (i) they want to be able
- to get out betas quickly and cheaply and i'm sure that a run of a
- couple of thousand cds is cheaper and quicker to produce and distribute
- than floppys (remember all the problems people reported last year due
- to botched disk copying on the final betas and LA). and (ii) i'm sure
- that somewhere in the reasoning behind moving to cds is the idea that
- people who've got cd drives are more likely to be more "serious" users
- than j.r.user who wants to see what's in the beta release. given that
- ibm (and microsoft) have started open beta programs they need some
- criteria to limit the "target audience"
-
- i think we can be fairly certain that when the real 2.1 comes out
- that it will be available on floppies.
-
- fyi i don't have a cd-rom drive and anyway as i live in "foreign parts"
- i wouldn't be able to get the beta anyway!
