- Yeah, I'm here. I've talked several times to the folks at IBM, both
- here in Austin and in Boca. I've also talked to Tom White out at
- Roland (though not lately). No one wants to spend money on this. In
- the meantime, between a serious bug in OS/2 that has wiped our
- development system several times, and problems with C Set/2, our
- development is way behind schedule. The MIDI scene under OS/2,
- especially considering how good it *should* be, is abysmal. If you
- want it, tell IBM, Roland, Music Quest, Voyetra, I'd recommend
- starting at the hardware level. Convincing them to support OS/2\MMPM
- is the place to start. Music Quest does distribute our driver with
- their developer's kit, but no one else even seemed interested.
-
- I just returned a DAP questionnaire to IBM telling them how little I
- thought of their *Developer's* assistance program (I think it should
- be renamed the Marketer's assistance program, personally). I had
- posted a message to their VM support venue, saying I was having
- problems thunking down to the 16 bit driver. After months of trying
- to get them to understand what I was talking about, I got a nice note
- saying that it looked like I had a thunking problem.
-
- The good news is that '93 will probably see about a hundred percent
- increase in my available time for development, and my new business
- partner is a little more on the ball, so I'm not doing two jobs at
- once. We'll be officially opening an office in Austin, as well as
- Ohio, and adding real phone numbers :-)
-
- I've also been trying to spend some time at least listening to what's
- going on with a new group trying to establish some standards for MIDI
- software interfaces. The opinion that I hear most is that the
- current various MM specs are inadequate. We're only to the point of
- throwing ideas on the table, so anything from there is some distance
- in the future.
-
- Enjoy.
