- After reading in Mr. Sipples wonderful OS/2 FAQ (2.0h) that a version
- of Micrografx's Designer for OS/2 was available, I called Micrografx on
- 12/14/92 to get a copy. The customer rep (Sherry, who I have talked to
- before and is always EXTREMELY helpful) said it (version 3.1 for OS/2)
- wasn't yet shipping, but should be by the end of the week. Since I
- subscribe to their Extended Technical Support Service (ETSS) (I bought
- Designer for Windows about this time last year), she said I was
- eligible for a free copy. Allowing for delays and shipping, I hoped to
- receive it before Christmas. Sure enough, on Christmas Eve, UPS/Santa
- delivered a copy (2-Day Blue Label) to my doorstop. The following is
- simply an installation "hint", and should not serve as a review,
- endorsement, etc. in any way, but hopefully will save somebody else a
- little time.
-
- 1. The program ships with 167 Type 1 fonts, usable by ATM under
- OS/2. If you do a full installation (which requires 17MB--minimum
- install is ~6.6MB), these are (naturally) installed along with
- everything else. I had plenty of room on my hard drive, so
- selected the full install. The "problem" is that on my IBM PS/2
- 70-121 (20mHz 386 with 120MB ESDI, external 520MB Fujitsu SCSI HD,
- 1640 Adaptec Controller, 12MB RAM), it now takes an additional 5
- minutes to boot, since it is reading each of these additional fonts
- into memory. Simply renaming the subdirectory they were in (and
- rebooting) disabled the fonts from loading, but also disabled all
- the other system fonts, except for System Proportional! I finally
- renamed the directory to its original name, and deleted all 167
- fonts one at time, i.e.
-
- OS/2 System->System Setup->Font>Palette->Edit Font->Delete
-
- I'm sure there is an easier way--I looked at the OS2SYS.INI and
- OS2.INI files with one of the .ini editors on hobbes, but didn't see
- anything obvious. I also couldn't find an option in the Micrografx
- installer to deinstall the fonts.
-
- 2. Since the program uses the Mirrors DLL made by Micrografx, I
- assume it is a 16-bit port of their Windows version, and not a full
- 32-bit app (I also get this impression from the FAQ). Still,
- speaking subjectively, it seems as responsive to me as their
- Windows version, and functionally equivalent.
-
- So the moral of the story: If you install all the Type 1 fonts, don't
- panic when you reboot, and your machine goes into a pattern of HD light
- flash, pause, HD light flash, pause, ... for 167 new fonts!
