  11. After months and months of people complaining that their disks
  12. get corrupted when running CHKDSK on a full partition, Microsoft
  13. "quietly" distributes this:

  46. INTRODUCTION
  47. ------------

  49. The Microsoft MS-DOS CHKDSK and UNDELETE commands dated 04/09/91,
  50. which are included in the Microsoft MS-DOS 5 Upgrade, do not work
  51. correctly on logical drives that require 256 sectors to store each
  52. copy of the file allocation table (FAT). If any of the partitions on
  53. your hard disk drive are within the ranges listed in the following
  54. section and you do not have version 5.0a of the Microsoft MS-DOS 5
  55. Upgrade, which includes CHKDSK.EXE and UNDELETE.EXE files dated
  56. 11/11/91, install the updated CHKDSK.EXE and UNDELETE.EXE files
  57. included with this application note.

  59. If your FAT occupies 256 sectors, using the CHKDSK.EXE file dated
  60. 04/09/91 with the /f parameter ("chkdsk /f" [without the quotation
  61. marks]) can result in data loss. Using the UNDELETE.EXE file dated
  62. 04/09/91 can lead to unpredictable results.
  63.  
  64. DETERMINING IF YOU NEED TO INSTALL THE UPDATED FILES
  65. ----------------------------------------------------

  67. Drives require a 256-sector FAT if they have partitions within the
  68. size ranges listed below. Because the potential problems are serious,
  69. these ranges include a margin of safety.
  70.  
  71.    127 MB-129 MB
  72.    254 MB-258 MB
  73.    508 MB-516 MB
  74.    1018 MB-1030 MB
  75.    2035 MB-2061 MB
  76.  
  77. You can use the Fdisk program to determine if you have a 256-sector
  78. FAT with the following procedure:
  79.  
  80. 1. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following and press the
  81.    ENTER key:
  82.  
  83.       fdisk
  84.  
  85. 2. Press 4 on the keyboard to select the Display Partition Information
  86.    option and press ENTER.
  87.  
  88. 3. The primary partition size is listed under the Mbytes heading. If
  89.    the size falls within any of the ranges specified above, install
  90.    the updated CHKDSK.EXE and UNDELETE.EXE files on the enclosed
  91.    PD0646 disk.
  92.  
  93. 4. If you have an extended partition, press the ENTER key to view
  94.    those partition sizes. If any of the extended partition sizes
  95.    listed under the Mbytes heading fall within the ranges specified
  96.    above, install the  CHKDSK.EXE and UNDELETE.EXE files on the
  97.    enclosed PD0646 disk.

  99. 5. Press the ESC key twice to exit to the MS-DOS command prompt.
  100.  
  101. TO REPLACE YOUR CHKDSK.EXE AND UNDELETE.EXE FILES
  102. -------------------------------------------------

  104. 1. Insert the enclosed PD0646 disk in your floppy disk drive.
  105.  
  106. 2. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following lines, pressing
  107.    ENTER after each line
  108.  
  109.       copy drive:\chkdsk.exe destination
  110.       copy drive:\undelete.exe destination
  111.  
  112.    where "drive" is the floppy disk drive containing the PD0646 disk
  113.    and "destination" is the drive and directory where your CHKDSK.EXE
  114.    and UNDELETE.EXE files currently reside. For example, if CHKDSK.EXE
  115.    and UNDELETE.EXE are located in the DOS directory on drive C and
  116.    the PD0646 disk is in drive A, you would type the following
  117.    commands:

  119.       copy a:\chkdsk.exe c:\dos
  120.       copy a:\undelete.exe c:\dos
  121.
