- I have just discovered this newsgroup, and through it am being introduced to
- the wonderful world of Linux. Having spent the last day grabbing the A series
- of SLS disks from tsx-11 and messing about with installation options, I have
- finally succeeded in getting a login prompt, et al (Heavenly trumpets sing
- out...:)
-
- However, all is not perfect in my little world. During the installation of
- the A3 and A4 disks, I received the same set of messages twice - once during
- the install of the base.taz package, and once during bin.taz. The messages
- were:
- HD: write_intr: status = 0x51
- HD: write_intr: error = 0x80
-
- Given that I was later able to boot up Linux, I hoped that I could safely
- ignore these messages. Alas, after bootup I tried running mail and received
- a number of errors for my efforts. All were of the style listed above (the
- exact wording escapes me at the moment), although there was also a reference
- to an unchanging location (dev = 0301, sector = 6305) each time I tried, as
- well as indications that the HD controller was being reset.
-
- Given that I am running a WD1007SE2 ESDI controller attached to a Fujitsu
- 300MB ESDI drive, the questions I have include:
- a) Is this a hardware problem?
- b) Is this a bad sector on the drive?
- c) Is this a general problem I can expect with this controller?
- d) If it IS a bad sector, can I solve this problem short of doing
- a low-level format on my drive? (ie How do I translate the
- sector info given above into a Head/Cyl/Offset entry to I can
- update my error table?)
-
- I will mention in passing that I have used this drive for the last 3 years
- as a 2-partition DOS drive; I deleted the extended partition last night and
- made it into a Linux partition. In other words, I never had any reason to
- suspect a media problem before this.
-
- Comments, etc. will be appreciated!
